What is a home protection plan?

A home protection plan is simple. It's a one-year service contract that covers the repair or replacement of many of the home system components and appliances that typically break down over time.

Why do I need a home protection plan?

It's not just about your budget - it's about having the confidence that a problem is handled before it even occurs. Whether it's your heating and air conditioning, refrigerator or just the kitchen faucet - appliances and home system components eventually fail. An American Home Shield Home Protection Plan can help you avoid the cost of repairs and replacements - but it also relieves you from the frustrations and uncertainties of finding a qualified service contractor.

How does a home protection plan work?

When a covered item breaks down, just follow these simple steps:

  • Request service online or by calling 1 866 400 2340.
  • Once your request is received, one of our contractors will contact you to schedule an appointment.
  • Your Trade Service Call Fee is due and payable to the contractor when they arrive.
  • The contractor will diagnose the problem and contact us.
  • We will determine whether your problem is covered by your home protection plan, the contractor will repair or replace your equipment.
  • We will follow up with you by email and/or phone to make sure your problem was resolved to your satisfaction.

What do the AHS Home Protection Plans cover?

You can choose a plan to cover many of the most frequently occurring breakdowns of home system components, appliances or both. See our home warranty plans for a complete list of over 20 major systems and appliances covered within the plans. You can also add additional items for a slightly higher cost.

Is everything in my home covered by the home protection plan?

Unfortunately, we cannot cover everything in your home. You can download our sample contract for a specific list of covered items, terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions.

What are the general exclusions from the contract?

When can I request service on my contract?

Your contract will become effective 15 days from the date you purchase a home protection plan. As soon as your contract is effective you can request service either by calling us at 1 866 400 2340 or creating an account at www.ahs.com.

How do I request service?

Once your contract is effective, you can request service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through www.ahs.com. You can also call us at 1 866 400 2340.

How many times can I use my American Home Shield Home Protection Plan?

You can take advantage of your home protection plan as many times as you want during the term of your contract. On average, our customers make 2 service requests each year.

What if I have an appliance that just can't be fixed?

If we determine your covered item can't be repaired by a service contractor, it will be replaced.

How long does my contract last?

Your contract term begins upon the date of contract issuance by American Home Shield and continues for one year (unless American Home Shield approves an alternative contract term) from that date.

What out-of-pocket expenses will I have?

For each service request, you will pay a Trade Service Call Fee to each contractor of a different trade (plumber, electrician, etc.) who visits your home to diagnose a problem or perform service. This fee typically will range from $75 to $125. There is the possibility of additional costs being associated with the repair or replacement of covered items. Details will be included in your contract.

Why does AHS offer Trade Service Call Fee options?

Our customers asked for more flexibility. Now you can pay a higher Trade Service Call Fee and lower your annual plan price, or choose a lower Trade Service Call Fee for a slightly higher annual cost.

How can a home protection plan help me sell my home?

Home protection plans can go a long way toward making your house stand out from the rest. Now you can offer your prospects more confidence - after making a big down payment, then can rest easy around the covered home systems and appliances in their new home.

How can a home protection plan help cover my investment when I purchase a new home?

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments of time, money and stress a person will ever make. We shouldn't have to experience anything like it for the following 10 years. At least with a home protection plan you can relax, knowing that your budget can be protected from sudden break downs of covered items.

How do I know my service contractor is qualified?

Our comprehensive network of approved contractors are monitored and graded on their performance through our customer satisfaction survey program.

How do I transfer or renew my contract?

If you need to renew or transfer your contract, simply call 1 866 400 2340.

How do I cancel my contract?

You may cancel your contract within the first 30 days of coverage. You will receive a refund of the paid contract fees less any service and claims costs incurred by American Home Shield. If you request cancellation after the 30th day, you will receive a pro-rated refund of the paid contract fees for the unexpired term, less an administrative fee of up to one months' payment (where permitted by law) and any service (and claims) costs incurred by American Home Shield. Terms of cancellation may vary by state.
